Gladiator came out when I was 14, and me and my buddy Seth went to the one movie theater that let minors see R-rated movies if a parent bought their tickets.
I remember totally loving the movie. I think I only saw it in the theater once, but when the DVD came out, I bought it day-and-date and spun it several times.
Strange, then, that I remember it as some balls-out action movie. Because it's not. There's a baffling amount of redundant dialog scenes that, for a years-later repeat, dragged it down. Weirdest of all is that the film starts out with a huge battle in Germania, and the next action scene (excluding the brief attempted execution of Maximus) is an hour later.
I ended up fast-forwarding the last half-hour of the movie, wanting to get to the final duel. Maybe that's how I watched it when I was 14.

This was actually the first DVD I ever saw. Nobody even had a DVD player yet, it was on someone's game system (Playstation? Xbox?) and the whole gang from highschool had gathered at Josh Hudson's to watch it. Later in the evening, we played LOTR Monopoly.
ReplyDeleteThe second DVD I saw was Bring It On.
Unfortunately, the first DVD I saw/owned was the atrocious 2000 remake of Godzilla.
ReplyDeleteYou were the first person I knew that had a DVD player. To this day, I still remember me coming over after school, and you popped in The Matrix. The scene selection feature really blew my mind. Haha
ReplyDeleteJustin - I remember one morning you wanted to watch Saving Private Ryan. I was surprised you wanted to sit through a 2 hr. 45 min. movie. Not much later did I realize that you were just skipping to the action scenes.
ReplyDeleteNo harm in that; those are the best parts, anyway, without all that Spielberg shlock.
