Mux200: Retromux Deux (plus Mux001 and Mux100)
I probably won't do a third Retromux for 300 (set for, at this rate, sometime in late 2020) given that a lot of these bands have either called it quits or have faded considerably. For example, The Joggers probably won't release another album, and I've used up all their muxable tracks. And Dan Deacon hasn't really done anything too spectacular as of late, same with The Smashing Pumpkins and... well, you get the idea. Maybe I'll revise that idea in 2020 and make it a combination of 001 and 002.
Last thing: Same as the jump from 099 to 100, there's new art for 200 and going forward. 001-099 was a picture I accidentally Photoshopped that way when I was 12 or so, and 100-199 was a rather triumphant photo of me leaping over fireworks after a particularly-difficult day of shooting Archetype. Given my total lack of talent at graphic design (and I haven't really directly talked to JET lately, who did some awesome art for the two Tapes By JET), I just took a rather horrifying picture of me. If anyone thinks it far too terrible for these fines Muxes, make me something better!
So download or stream Mux200, and check out Muxes of yore below it.

Mux121: Winter's Last Stand
I also broke my rule of not having a band on two muxes in a row, since Wiping out Thousands put out a great minimalist single, "Evening" (grab it here) that is a far cry from 120's "Hips." They've got a show coming up at the Entry on the 24th, so if you've got five bucks and a free Sunday nite, come and check them out.
Oh right: Boom.

17. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
18. Liars - The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack
Also, I'm not sure if it's too heavy-handed or not, but ending with "Maps" followed by "The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack" was oh-so deliberate. Because of, you know, the Karen O / Angus Andrew romance. The songs put back-to-back is some high concept, call-and-response shit.
It also seems that "Kid A" has dethroned "The Tourist" and "Fog" as my favorite Radiohead song. Well, as the obvious truth is, I can only fit X songs on an 80 minute CD-R, and I only go with one song per band. "Kid A" is sort of my flavor of the season, since I'm in the process of sort of covering it and, lyrically, it's fairly brilliant.
Hell, while I Postscript this to death, I might as well toss up a few excellent cuts or alternates that were very painfully excised from my original giant iTunes playlist:

1. Shine A Light
2. Kissing The Behive
I was afraid that, just after playing Pitchfork, these guys would be exhausted. The opposite seemed the case. Maybe they were energized playing a much smaller venue than the vast wasteland that is Chicago's Union Park.
Anyhow, as I had seen when I first saw Wolf Parade in 2006, these guys sound massive live. I am not a fan of "You Are A Runner And I Am My Father's Son" in any capacity, but they really turned it up to, dare I say, 11, and in the process turned most of the indie kids in the front into a schizoid dance party.
It was also pretty telling of their live style when co-frontman Spencer Krug (see also: Sunset Rubdown, Swan Lake, Frog Eyes, every indie rock back in Montreal, etc.) announced that all the smokers could go outside for about seven minutes while they played "slow songs." They then launched into "Fine Young Cannibals" and "In the Direction of the Moon," both of which, while midtempo, were absolutely gigantic. Same goes for their set proper closer "California Dreamer," which is a bit mellow on the At Mount Zoomer LP but which turned into a total rockout.
Wolf Parade is a lot like The National in that sense. On the record, they're restrained and a bit perfectionistic, and when live, they have these alternate versions of the songs that just explode.
The only substantial disappointment, oddly enough, was encore closer "Kissing the Beehive." (They should've saved the one-two punch of "I'll Believe In Anything" and "This Heart's On Fire" for the encore.) While, fortunately, they left all slow cuts behind, including 2006 closer "Dinner Bells," the extended jam of "Kissing the Beehive" just gets kind of exhausting after a while. The band succeeds so well at three-to-five-minute jams that stretching something past the ten minute mark just makes you realize how deaf you are and how you can't hear what the fuck guitarist/co-frontman Dan Boeckner is actually playing.
Also, "I'll Believe In Anything," far and away the bands best song, just didn't pop on stage as when you're blasting it on your car stereo. Probably since, structurally, it's a weird song, what with the near-atonal synth lines and fairly intricate lyrics without the hooks of Boeckner's usual shout-along choruses.
All in all, I had to update my little Word file of bands I've seen this morning. And under my "Best Shows Ever" list, I added last night's Wolf Parade show just under their 2006 First Ave. appearance.

So here are my current favorite songs ever. Note the list tends to skew toward current fare - mostly because I didn't start listening to good music until 2004.

Very flavor-of-the-year, but that's the beauty of it. Also, omitted "The Tourist" by Radiohead, which is my Favorite Song Ever but doesn't really fit anywhere.
