Mux201: Mr. Mux Plays The Hits

Download or stream.

Not going to post the tracklist because 1) pretty sure most of you will know all the songs, and 2) I like to throw in a little mystery every now and then.

The title of the Mux is fairly self-explanatory. It actually started right when Random Access Memories came out and I didn't want to put "Get Lucky" on anything because it was ridiculously overplayed. So I literally made an advance playlist called Mux201 and put "Get Lucky" on it, knowing it'd be a few years before I got around to it (and already knowing that Mux200 would be another Retromux). So yeah, thrilling origin story.

1. The Modern Lovers - Roadrunner (The Modern Lovers)
2. The Cars - Just What I Needed (The Cars)
3. Weezer - Buddy Holly (The Blue Album)
4. Prince - Little Red Corvette (1999)
5. Radiohead - Idioteque (Kid A)

Mux195: Mr. Mux Drops The Mic

Download or stream.

Decided to push this one out the door a few hours before the new Radiohead drops. Like Battles' La Di Da Di, I'll likely be breaking my rule of not having a band on two consecutive muxes, especially since I've got "Daydreaming" already queued up for the June mux. Here I've got a ripped MP3 from the "Burn The Witch" video, so if the album cut omits the heads and tails, apologies if you're offended by birds chirping and a fade out that is about half a second shorter than I wanted.

This is a bit of a frankenmux in terms of genres. It's mostly rock but it goes Top 40 with the new Justin Timberlake single, which is nowhere near anything on The 20/20 Experience Part 1 but will serve as a good earworm for the next two weeks. I'm sure it'll horribly date this mux, like the time I once put a song from Chinese Democracy on one as a non-joke joke. And then I push it even farther with the rave-y A-Track/Phantogram collab but, hey, people like this summery shit, am I rite?

1. Shearwater - Radio Silence (Jet Plane And Oxbow)
2. Radiohead - Burn The Witch (A Moon Shaped Pool)

Mux065: The Quarter Century

Here's a lot of mux tracks on my giant Put-On-A-Muxtape playlist that I finally decided to halfway-decently sequence and, well, put on a mux. Side note: Do you know how hard it is to find a place for "Transatlanticism" without shoving it at the end of a mix? I barely squeezed it in there without grinding things to a halt.

And since Megaupload doesn't let you stream, I'll be posting these on Soundcloud with an embedded player. Only problem is I have a finite time limit for my overall uploads, so I'll probably have to delete each mux when the next comes out. A necessary-evil workaround.

So download via the obnoxious Megaupload and stream below via Soundcloud.

The tracks:

1. David Bowie - Five Years
2. Pulp - Common People
3. The Get Up Kids - I'm A Loner, Dottie, A Rebel...
4. Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
5. Weezer - Say It Ain't So
6. Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism
7. Brian Eno - By This River
8. Radiohead - Sulk
9. Spoon - The Underdog
10. The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
11. The National - Mr. November

Making their mux debut:
Brian Eno (though I swore I had the Eno/Byrne track "Strange Overtones" on a mux...)
The Get Up Kids
Harvey Danger
Pulp

  • Battles - Untitled Tyondai Braxton-less album (in production)
  • Cee-Lo Green - The Lady Killer

  • Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest (plus at least a bonus EP or, hell, a secret double album)

  • Kanye West - Album formerly titled Good Ass Job

  • The Thermals - Personal Life (leaked)
  • The Walkmen - Lisbon (leaked)
  • Weezer - Hurley (it should have at least one decent song, right?)

Mux013: Black Friday, the resissue

In honor of the most ridiculous calendar day of American consumeristic greed, I'm reissuing last year's Black Friday "schizomix" with a bit of retconning. See, when I first made it, I included the title track from the abortion that is Guns N Roses' Axl Rose's Chinese Democracy as a grand, limp-fish joke. I might have actually deluded myself into thinking I could enjoy such a cock-rock single, but my enjoyment with the song lasted a mere handful of days. And keeping in line with a good mix rule of thumb to keep things under forty-five minutes, it has been graciously axed from this fine array of songs.

Thus, the link, which I'm contractually obligated to say is hosted by the fine folks at drop.io.

1. Jay Reatard - Blood Visions
2. Wolfmother - The Joker and the Thief

Mux039: November 2009

I'm going out of town from Halloween until the 9th, so consider this the official chunk of the Pitchfork 500 month-starting mux. And yes, I legitimately like a Weezer track off Raditude, which is surprisingly better than The Red Album. But there's nothing nearly as good as "Pork And Beans."

But anyways--

Mux022 / Re-examining The Red Album

Just in time for Mother's Day. And one year after my first mux, when Muxtape used to be worthy of creating muxes. I don't even know what they do now. Not even worth linking. Or checking.

Download the full mix via drop.io. The tracks:

1. Metric - Help, I'm Alive
2. Japandroids - Wet Hair
3. Rage Against The Machine - Guerrilla Radio
4. Franz Ferdinand - Ulysses
5. The Thermals - When I Died
6. The Sea And Cake - Car Alarm
7. Radiohead - Blow Out (Remix)
8. The Ting Tings - Be The One
9. Atlas Sound - Springtime Instrumental
10. Why? - The Hollows
11. Neko Case - This Tornado Loves You
12. Camera Obscura - French Navy

Also, I gave this neglected album an impromptu listen earlier:

Seriously, it's not that bad. Sure, it disappointed all post-Blue Album, post-Pinkerton expectations in which everyone expected it to be as good as The Blue Album or Pinkerton, but there are some good tracks here. And forget all the ridiculous stuff Rivers and the band said about how "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" was the best thing Weezer has ever recorded.

I listened to it as a reaction to Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown last night, which I think is a resounding Eh at best. I pinned it down pretty easily: even if some songs are catchy power-chord pop-rock, Green Day positions themselves as some saviors of everything, which comes off as condescending, obnoxious, and really pretentious. With regards to the latter, it doesn't help that the over-arcing "opera" is some impenetrable, impossible-to-follow-without-liner-notes narrative.

So here's why, at the root of things, I like the Red Album: it doesn't take too itself seriously. "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" isn't an unnecessary statement about the state of things; it's a huge, proggy, silly song. "Troublemaker" is fairly innocuous. "Porks and Beans" is downright solid. "Thought I Knew" is the only downright-bad track, mostly considering that a song not sung or written by Rivers, by definition, isn't a Weezer song. The rest are fairly mild on the ears.

I don't recall ever downright-trashing The Red Album, and now there's further reason not to: it's passably good.

October Mux

Muxtape, as once known, is dead, but dammit, I'm still calling them muxtapes, and here's one to start off October:
  1. David Holmes - I Heard Wonders
  2. Weezer - No One Else
  3. Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene) - Churches Under the Stairs
  4. King Khan and the Shrines - Outta Harm's Way
  5. Vivian Girls - Where Do You Run To?
  6. Radiohead - Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
  7. Do Make Say Think - In Mind
  8. Oxford Collapse - B-Roll
  9. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - In This Home On Ice
  10. The National - Guest Room
  11. Wolf Parade - An Animal In Your Care
  12. Born Ruffians - Red Elephant
Hey, a Vivian Girls track! See? I'm a Pitchfork reader hipster! So what if, a month from now, I'll probably hate that album? It sounds kind of cool now!

Obligatory film update: Shot parts one and two, so shooting is officially 2/9th done. An awkward fraction, yeah, but at least I know there's 7/9th left. More work in less time, but it can be done. If worst comes to worst, I end up behind schedule and release in March instead of February.

Scratch that, the worst that could happen is breaking my camera. Or a leg. Or both. At the same time.

But this is just shooting. There will be a lot of post, but I like post better than shooting. Compared to all my past projects, though, this shoot is relatively painless. Just tiring. And a constant learning process/experience.

Also: On a semi-whim, I bought a custom shirt for $70 for my character to wear in a very low number of scenes. Probably just about six shots. I'll definitely wear the shirt once the film wraps, but it's kind of scary knowing that, excluding my iMac, $70 is a fourth of what I've already spent on this film. Probably only about $200 left to spend after that, and half of that is for DV tapes. And to think that low-budget films still cost over a million. This is no-budget filmmaking. But I wouldn't have it any other way, really.

Unless I got paid to do this.
